Welcome to the Museum für Natur und Umwelt

Welcome to the Museum für Natur und Umwelt

The Museum für Natur und Umwelt - Museum of Nature and Environment, which covers three floors, offers fascinating insights into the natural history of Schleswig-Holstein and the rich flora and fauna of the Lübeck area.

The interactive exhibition "Im Reich des Wassermanns" - In Mermans' Realm - presents Lübeck's rivers, Trave and Wakenitz and the nearby Baltic sea in an enthralling way.

Experience a journey through time to past earth periods, when this country was still covered by water. Many extinct lifeforms are displayed as fossils. Unique to Europe are the fossil whales, dating from the Miocene over 10 million years ago and found at nearby Pampau.

In a glazed extension to the museum vou can see the 14-metre long skeleton of a sperm whale, which stranded on the Danish island of Römö in December 1997.

Observe the behaviour of bees in their hive. With the help of the "Luebeck bee dance clock" you can even learn to interpret the language of bees.

We owe a big dept of gratitude to the Luebeck physician Johann Julius Walbaum. It was his bequest in 1799 which formed the basis of the former Museum of Natural History in Lübeck and also his intention to teach natural sciences and nature worship. That is still our policy today.

The museum offers lectures, guided tours and a variety of pedagogical programs, which can be arranged individually.

The Museum für Natur und Umwelt  also regularly hosts exhibitions on current topics.
